A new Flash based game for AEGON Scottish Equitable

AEGON Scottish Equitable asked Gencia to produce a viral quiz game to promote the launch of their new Income for Life plan.

With only a small budget, we produced a slick looking Flash based quiz game with a Formula 1 racing theme.

A new website for Henderson Rowe

Henderson Rowe Limited is an investment management firm working directly with discretionary clients. They wanted a  clean, professional style for their new website.

They didn't have a budget for bespoke photography so we used some great London cityscape shots to theme the site and add some visual interest.

How Gencia cost a small to medium size development project

Gencia provide many and varied bespoke creative and technical solutions to suit the unique requirements of each of our clients. This post outlines the logical step-by-step process that we use to define the scope of a small to medium size development project.

At the beginning of the  process the client usually has one or more objectives in mind and a specific requirement, such as the development of a website. At this point the detail of the project has not yet been defined but, naturally the client wants to know what the solution will cost before they commit to the work. This creates a dilemma because it is usually not possible to accurately price the work without first completing a large proportion of it – namely the technical specification – which is the part of the project that informs the man hours and costs for development.

Google will now index your Flash, or will it? And if so, do you want it to?

It's official, Google and Flash are now friends. Google recently announced the introduction of an algorithm which will crawl your SWF files and index the text and links within.

No doubt many web designers who are partial to Flash will find their jobs will be made somewhat easier as they can begin to build sites safe in the knowledge that they can be picked up by the spiders, though the question for me, as a web developer with an SEO interest, is will the Google spiders find Flash embedded with SWFObject or FlashObject?

A great story from Gardner Berke - Tornado caught speeding!

We recently created a new website for Gardner Berke

They are a traditional law firm based in Manchester. They're also two great guys who really enjoy helping people and I have to admit they have helped the Gencia team out with the odd driving related 'issue' with great success. I can't recommend them highly enough.

This is a story from their website which I had to steal for our blog because it makes me chuckle every time I read it:-

Two British patrol officers from North Berwick, east of Edinburgh, were involved in an unusual incident, while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road.

One of the officers (who are not named) used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300mph. The machine then stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

The radar had in fact locked on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet over the North Sea, which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Borders district.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liason office.

Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style. 'Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had automatically locked on to your 'hostile radar equipment' and sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, the Sidewinder air-to-ground missiles aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also locked onto the target. Fortunately the Dutch pilot flying the Tornado responded to the missile status alert intelligently and was able to override the automatic protection system before the missile was launched.'

Should you put video on your website?

If it’s produced well the answer is probably yes but there are a few things to consider before you go ahead with your first big budget Hollywood production.

I’m a big fan of video content on the web because it’s a great way to communicate lots of information and it doesn’t require any effort on the part of the viewer. Very few of the visitors to your website will take the time to carefully read long pages of text and understand the content. At best they will skim over the homepage in order to get the gist of whether they’ve arrived at the right place and if you’re offering what they’re looking for. It often pays to be repetitive with key messages in your copy and to use them in headings and bullet points. But what if you have a really complex message to get across that takes paragraph after paragraph of wordy copy to deliver? The answer could be a well executed video.

Inbound links - it’s important what other sites say about you as well

Good honest SEO is the future.  Make your site’s content as relevant as possible for your target audience and you should be rewarded with the visitors you are after.  Forget about keyword spamming and other such tricks (admittedly I achieved my first top ten ranking via dubious means) – there are numerous ways in which you can optimise your site that will not be frowned up by search engines and cost you your ranking at a later date and which will put you in good stead moving forward.

Lose that IE rollover flicker

Despite being a devout Mozilla Firefox user, as a web developer every now and again I revert to using Internet Explorer 6 (for testing purposes only I might add) and more often than not I remember where my decision to switch browsers all those years ago came from what with all those little quirks it has.

The introduction of IE7 to the browser family has seen a more robust stable browser that is less buggy and conforms to good HTML and CSS coding, but IE6, despite being the ginger stepson of said family, still has a large user base with around 16% of visitors to the Gencia website over the last month still persevering with it.
